The term "gaslighting" has become incredibly popular because it gives a specific name to a subtle, toxic form of psychological and emotional manipulation. It describes when a person or group deliberately makes someone question their own memory, perception, or sanity.
The phrase is being widely used for a few key reasons:
  • Rise in Mental Health Awareness: Discussions about toxic relationships, narcissism, and emotional abuse have become mainstream. The term provides a clear vocabulary for a dynamic that many people experience but previously struggled to articulate.
  • Cultural and Political Application: The word is frequently used in media and politics to describe situations where leaders or public figures persistently deny established facts or reframe narratives to manipulate public perception.
  • The "Buzzword" Effect: As discussed on platforms like Reddit, the term's massive popularity has led to its overuse. While it originated as a term for clinical abuse, it is often casually misapplied today to mean lying, being stubborn, or simply disagreeing with someone.

The phrase originates from the 1938 British stage play Gas Light and the classic 1944 film adaptation starring Ingrid Bergman. In the story, a manipulative husband [secretly alters the home's gas lights in the attic]. When his wife notices the dimming lights, he relentlessly convinces her that she is just imagining it, making her question her own reality.
